If your'e not familiar, Bike Boom is a used bike shop in Davis square, on the border of Cambridge and Somerville, near Boston MA. where we specialize in restoring and refurbishing used and vintage bikes and offer professional bicycle repair services.
The 1966 Chrome Raleigh was only available to Raleigh dealers and was originally meant to be a showroom example not to be sold to the public. Over time , bike shops around the US closed and these are starting to surface, especially with the rise in popularity of these great riding machines. The Raleigh sports is probably the most popular English 3 speed ever made and they were sold in high volumes during the 60's and 70's even though the have been imported to the US from the 30's all the way to the early 80's. they were offered in several versions: women's. men's, women's curbed top tube, and also a few models were dedicated for shorter customers: the colt model, and the hump back (camel back) which sported a more compact men's frame. They were also sold under the Raleigh glider model. in the 70's there was also a model called sports LTD. they were mostly made in England but here at the shop we had a few samples made in Malaysia (late 70's). These bikes along side with the more budget oriented triumph, Phillips, and robin hoods, were very popular, especially in the east coast and the Boston area as the importer was located in the heart of Boston in commonwealth ave.
a very comprehensive source about Raleigh sports 3 speeds from Sheldon brown who was known to be an avid Raleigh collector and admirer.

ReplyDeleteI have one picked up at yard sale 10 yrs ago. I thought it was painted silver till I got it home and cleaned it up. missing some decals but I'm leaving it as is. A friend who's family sold Raleigh's and Schwinn told my these all chrome bikes were gifts from manufactures for a good sales yr. Reason there's no serial number! A real nice bike everybody wants.
