This 1998 Gary fisher Big Sur mountain bike was in mint condition and looked as if it had less then 20 rides in total. We come across really nice mountain bikes but while road bikes since the mid nineties have pretty much stayed the same, mountain bike technology changes everuy year and thus used mountain bikes value drops rapidly. this 1998 Gary fisher Big Sur is a great example of a high end mid-late nineties bicycle geometry with the long top tube and 70-80mm fork travel. bikes like the 1998 Gary Fisher Big Sur were meant to climb and go fast. Back then most of the mountain biking was cross country. The top tube is long in order to create a front leaning position that puts the center of mass in the front to help you climb and to create a more aerodynamic position so you could go faster. I wish we had more customers for these bikes as Boston is Surrounded with dozens of quality trails.

this 1998 Gary Fisher Big Sur came with a mix of shimano STX-RC components and XT rear derailer with an interesting sugino crank, something you don't see any more on mountain bikes.

1989 Miyata Sandstorm

1989 Miyata Sandstorm road bike we refurbished here at Bike Boom. If your'e not familiar, Bike Boom is a used bike shop in Davis square, on the border of Cambridge and Somerville , near Boston MA. where we specialize in restoring and refurbishing used and vintage bikes and offer professional bicycle repair services.

 The 1989 Miyata sandstorm was marketed as a bike path or a light cruiser, basically a bike you can easily ride on the weekend with an upright riding position. It was made to look similar to a mountain bike which at 1989 were starting to be very popular. It has a mountain bike frame and wheels but is equipped with caliper brakes and a 1x6 drive train. It also had a one piece crank and chain guard, similar to a cruiser.

We received the bike with a torn seat and dry tires, installed a nice cushy mattress seat off an american 3 speed columbia and fully refurbished it with thin , semi slick tires, new cables, housings, brake pads and grips. here is the 1989 Miyata catalog, it does show a different crank and handlebar/stem set up

Back in the late 80's and early 90's almost every manufacturer had this kind of bike in their arsenal, some even came with cruiser bars. The 1989 Miyata sandstorm is a cross between a comfort bike and and an old school cruiser with a very similar geometry to the Bridgestone BB-1 even though the Bridgestone BB-1 had more features of a mountain bike with the cantilever brakes and a triple crank. We love bikes like the Miyata sandstorm because they are already set up as upright commuters with the high stem and riser bars and that allows us to sell them cheaper. Very often we get nice rigid mountain bike but the have low stem and flat bars which result in a crouching position and then we have to spend time and replace parts to change them. People around Cambridge and Boston seem to like the relaxed up right riding position which is more suited for the beginner commuter who wants to see the road and cars around him at all times. Sold to a student in tufts university.

1982 or 1983 Diamondback Ridge Runner

Diamondback Ridge Runner we had here at Bike Boom. If your'e not familiar, Bike Boom is a used bike shop in Davis square, on the border of Cambridge and Somerville , near Boston MA. where we specialize in restoring and refurbishing used and vintage bikes and offer professional bicycle repair services.
This Diamond back ridge runner is a recent find of our good friend Curtis and has yet to be refurbished. One day when people start collecting mountain bikes more seriously like the guys at mombat.org  the museum of mountain bike art & technology, the diamond back ridge runner is going to be a must in any serious collection.
In 1991 specialized made the stumpjumper and had great success. In 1982 centurion released the ridge runner as a super high end mountain bike featuring a lugged frame with ornate lugs, top of the line Suntour components and high end Tange 5 double butted chromoly tubing. Diamondback didn't save any money with this bike and the later 1984 model wasn't as  high end as this one. The diamondback ridge runner featured ultra long wheelbase and shallow angle head tube and seat tube as they were meant mainly for downhill. The funny thing is even though they were built as sturdy bikes for dirt riding they share a very similar geometry with the English cruisers like the Raleigh tourist (DL-1) and sports and even turn of the century bikes which were meant for street riding.
 The bike is currently for sale. I had it in the shop for a few days and every day I found another interesting feature on it. The bull moose handlebar with the angled tubing are quite unique also the ornate lugs and especially the Superbe tech derailer. The superbe tech was suntour's top of the line derailer and debuted in 1982-1983. it had a unique design with a sealed paralelgram and had a unique cable pull but in reality the design failed and was a huge humiliation for suntour which was then the world's leading bicycle components manufacturer. More about the superbe tech derailer in disraeli gears a very informative site with great pictures that concentrate solely on rear derailers and another beautiful and restored 1982 diamondback ridgeline.
